An effort by people in Clearwater County, Idaho to plan, finance and build a multipurpose
Clearwater Community Complex, Inc.

Wellness Center

A proposed element of the Clearwater Community Complex

Objective

The objective of the Pool/Wellness Center Committee is to put forth a document that covers what will be included and to describe in rough detail what we would like to see for such a facility.

Wellness Center: Facilities

Aquatics Area:

Competition Pool: There will be one competition/laps pool which will be 25 yd x 25 m. The dimensions for this pool are for two different types of swim meets. High School competition meets are held at 25 meter pools, while Inland Empire swim meets are held at 25 yard pools. The proposed dimensions would allow us to hold both types of swim meets. Three sides of the pool would be outfitted for removable starting blocks, and four sides would be outfitted for the attachment of lane ropes. The depth of this pool will range from 4 ft to 14 ft allowing for the starting blocks and a one-meter diving board. Another thing that would be nice would be a slide. The temperature for this pool will be kept between 78°F and 81°F; this is a good temperature for lap swimming so the swimmer does not overheat. Lap swimming is an activity enjoyed by all ages, also the diving board and slide will attract the younger ages to the pool. Other little things that could be added would be water polo goals and a water basketball hoop.

Physical Therapy (PT) Pool:

There will be one PT pool 18 ft x 25 m that is located at the end of the competition pool. This will be handicap accessible and will have one lane with zero depth entrance with handrails to aid people entering the PT pool. The depth of this lane will depend on the physical therapists' needs. There will be two other lanes for lap swimming and water walking. This pool will be warmer for therapeutic benefits as well as for those not strenuously working. The PT pool will also be beneficial for young children's swim lessons so they do not get too cold during the lesson. This pool will be shallower than the competition pool, yet deep enough for a person to swim laps.

Kiddie Pool:

This pool will be 12 ft by 36 ft and will be a maximum depth of 18 in. This pool will be warmer and will have its own filtration system, providing a place for young children to play.

Bleachers:

The bleachers will run along one side of the pool starting 6 ft from the edge. They will be made of concrete with a large space underneath that will be enclosed for storage. The bottom walkway of the bleachers will start 4 ft off the pool deck. Each row will be 3 ft deep. Seating for approximately 150 will be put in the center area of the bleachers with both outer sides being left without seats for those people who would like to bring their own chairs (similar to the OHS baseball field). This area will also be available for people to keep their bags and to stretch out more.

Lifeguard Office:

The office will need a first aid station, a bed, file cabinets for keeping records, desks and lockers. Some other nice things would be a fridge and microwave.

Locker Room:

There will be two main locker rooms: one for males and one for females. These will be used by the entire facility. There will be lockers available for use. There will be restroom facilities as well as a showering area. The showering area for each will consist of one large group shower and two private showers. Other things that would be nice are some private changing rooms, spin-driers for drying swimsuits, and wall mounted hair driers.

There will be one private handicap accessible changing room and adjacent showering facility so an aide of either sex could assist. These will be equipped with fold down benches and a hand held shower with adjustable temperature. There will be lockers available for use in the vicinity. The proposed area for this will be near the PT area.

Physical Therapy Rooms:

This area will be set up for the physical therapists to prep and work on patients. We propose three individual rooms to be outfitted to meet the therapists' needs. The most logical placing for this area would be near the pool since there currently is no PT pool available for therapy.

Gymnasium:

This will be a multifunctional gymnasium. The hardwood floor gym will have 6 glass blackboards, two of which will retract and four that will be adjustable/movable. There will be a divider curtain in the center to separate the gym into two courts allowing for more than one activity to take place at a time. Insert holes for volleyball nets and badminton nets would also be in the floor. The most common type of bleachers that we found were called tip-and-roll bleachers. There will be a 1/16 mile long elevated track that encircles the basketball court and is an extension of the second floor.

Racquetball Court:

Two racquetball courts with hardwood floors. One will feature at least one glass wall for outside viewing and the other is enclosed for privacy. These courts can be used for racquetball, handball and wallyball. There will be lockers inside the wall.

Climbing Wall:

The climbing wall we have proposed is a tower design extending for two stories. The climbing wall will have interchangeable holds and varying terrain for diffent degrees of difficulty. This design allows for a wide range of skills and keeps the interest of the climbers.

Fitness Area:

This area will have free-weights, circuit weight machines and cardiovascular equipment such as treadmills, step machines and stationary bikes. There should also be mirrors strategically placed for aiding free-weight users.

Multi-Use Rooms:

Aerobics/Dance Room: This room will have a rubber isolator pad underneath a hardwood floor. There will also be dance bars along the wall. This room will be outfitted with a sound system and cubby holes for storage of personal items.

Mat Room: This room will be covered with mats to accomodate martial arts classes, tumbling classes and any other similar fitness activities requiring the use of a mat floor.

Miscellaneous: A few things that need to be included

Upstairs restroom: There needs to be one unisex restroom on the second floor.

Elevator: There needs to be an elevator available for handicap accessibility.

Baby sitting: There should be a supervised area for the care of young children; infants to 5 years of age. It should include a changing table, a child-sized restroom, a coat rack/boot area, tables, chairs and a play area.

Wellness Center:

More Thoughts

  • Pool Office: need sink, stackable washer/drier would be nice (at least the drier)
  • Gym: scoreboard, separate sound system allows for special event programming
  • Drinking fountains/spittoons away from wooden floor
  • Wellness Center/Activities Office: to include first aid station and should be with the equipment/checkout/storage space (take care in location and layout).
  • Mat and/or aerobic/dance room with outside entrance?
  • Towerl Service: commercial sized washer/drier

Do Again Comments

Pool/Wellness:

  • ***** Increase storage space
  • *** Larger locker rooms, larger lockers (14" deep), more lockers, better humidity control, family locker room area, individual water temperature controls for each shower, high quality faucets, walk behind wall in shower area for easy access to plumbing, choose flooring carefully
  • *** Larger fitness area, integrated fitness area
  • ** Larger or second aerobics room/dance room, attention to acoustics
  • Sleeve system for volleyball supports rather than anchor system
  • More racquet ball courts
  • Separate HVAC system for various areas, hire a consultant for sound systems
  • Lighting: more direct light sources in pool area, all lighting should be economical and readily accessible for changing
  • Air condition gym
  • Pools on separate pump systems, attention to acoustics, concrete stair tower for waterslide (lasts longer)
  • Elevator in central location easily visible to staff

Complex:

  • ***** Increase number and size of offices, offices not on "front line"
  • Increase effectiveness and ease of operation of building alarm system
  • Functional loading and unloading for deliveries
  • Staff lounge: operations require large number of part time and volunteer help
  • Community rooms larger
  • Main kitchen: commercial size
  • Better storage for tables and chairs
  • Lobby: attention to acoustics
  • Better control over customers entering facility
  • Senior room with pool tables, TV?

Hired director too late in process!!

(could have anticipated some operational needs)
